Claudia Schiffer drinks alcohol for Karl Lagerfeld

Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, and Claudia Schiffer – the gorgeous Top Five supermodels of the 1990s. The shapely blond Schiffer has been with the fashion industry for 20 years. Somehow she managed to keep both her beauty and reputation intact. Schiffer is widely known for fighting shy of the press. She made an exception for Le Temps last month.

Schiffer got into the spotlight following her triumphant comeback to the fashion industry in 2007. The thrifty Schiffer could increase her wealth to $120 million and buy an old castle in Suffolk after cutting a very profitable deal with L’Oreal. The renewed creative cooperation with the noted fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld was yet another stroke of luck that befell Schiffer several months ago. It was Lagerfeld who helped Schiffer climb the catwalk in the early 1990s. Schiffer ceased to be a muse for Lagerfeld at the turn of the twenty first century. He switched his attention to a different variety of models e.g. Kate Moss and similar specimens. However, this summer Lagerfeld decided that Schiffer would fit nicely in his campaign for Dom Perignon Champagne’s brand Enotheque 1993. The ads feature Schiffer as a woman who metamorphoses from an eighteenth-century duchess to a twenty-first century femme fatale.

Schiffer refused to advertise a yogurt brand for a $250,000 fee in the past. She is often referred to as a teetotaler by the press. When asked by Le Temps why she had agreed to do an ad campaign for Dom Perignon, Schiffer said: “But I do drink alcoholic beverages! I can drink a glass of red wine or champagne. But I don’t drink to get drunk. I’m not a partygoer. I can drink a bit to celebrate some special occasion with my family. There was plenty of Dom Perignon at my wedding party!”

Indeed, paparazzi never had a single chance to take a picture of Schiffer getting plastered at a party. Besides, the 38-year-old Schiffer always kept a low profile when it comes to dating (her weird affair with David Copperfield being the only exception). She was never involved in any scandals related to illicit drugs; she was never taken to a police station with handcuffs on her wrists nor was she ever ordered to check into a rehab.

“It’s only normal when you start falling out of favor with fashion designers and photographers,” Schiffer said unflinchingly, apparently referring to a time when was not much in demand within the industry. “It was a time well-spent for me. I got married and gave birth to two wonderful children,” added she. Schiffer claims she will promptly reject any “obscene” offer no matter how lucrative it may appear. She dreads the thought of her children catching a glimpse of that sort of “disgrace.” Second, by no means is Schiffer ready to compromise her principles. Schiffer, a native of Düsseldorf, was born into a close-knit family. Keeping my reputation blemish-free is my top priority, said Schiffer.

Several tabloids printed the photos of a different Schiffer in the late 1990s: a worn-out woman with unkempt hair and a forlorn look in her eyes. A French newspaper put out the following comment as if to deny the rumors about Schiffer’s “moral decay:” It’s just her new image. Claudia is destined to be a Burger Fraulein for the rest of her life.” Schiffer, a millionaire and supermodel whose pictures graced the covers of more than 500 magazines, does not seem to refute the allegations.
