Lenin s Hometown, Entire Streets Cave In

In Ulyanovsk, Lenin s hometown, 140 houses are in jeopardy as they may cave at any time.
The landslide area covers entire streets. People feel the ground under their feet moving away. The rescuers insist that everyone in the hazardous area be urgently evacuated and soil stabilization measures taken, warning that failure to do so will have grave consequences.

However, only those whose houses had been fully destroyed were moved from the landslide area. The city budget has no funds to move the rest concerned. The only option offered by the city hall for the inhabitants of five destroyed houses was to move to a modest temporary dwelling without a housing order. The outlook for the others is rather gloomy.

The total cost of landslide control operations in Ulyanovsk is estimated at 6 billion roubles. This sum is 50 % larger than the regional budget and is unlikely to be found in the immediate future.
