Samsung unveils electronic passport with flexible OLED display

Samsung Corporation unveiled the state-of-the-art prototype of the electronic passport outfitted with two-inch QVGA definition flexible AMOLED display. The display will be used in the passport instead of the static photograph of a passport holder.

The new passport will be able to contain a lot more information about a person than a conventional paper passport or a biometric document. It will also be a lot more difficult to make a counterfeit copy of such an ID, MobileDevice.ru website reports.

It is not known yet, when the production of the new passport is going to be launched. The flexible display shows the passport owner from any angle: it displays a rotating photographic avatar when placed near a source of power. More importantly, there is absolutely no need to recharge the display. The passport will be powered with the RFID module – a chip responsible for the identification of the passport owner.

The display will not show anything if there is no signal from the RFID reader: there will be only a blank white display in the passport instead. However, when the ID is placed near the scanner, the AMOLED display will show the rotating image in 260,000 colors and 10,000:1 contrast.
