Large Hadron Collider may produce black holes

Russian scientists say that the experiment with Large Hadron Collider does not threaten to trigger a global catastrophe. The device is the world’s most powerful accelerator of particles. Physicists hope that it will help them find an answer to the question of the composition of the Universe. Modern science has studied only four percent of the Universe.

The Large Collider is not only a source of hopes, but a source of serious concerns. Rumor has it that the experiments in the underground accelerator may trigger the appearance of black holes and subsequently destroy the Earth. Russian scientists, however, are certain of the opposite.

Mikhail Tkachev, a member of the workgroup for the security of the Large Hadron Collider:

“All this is absolutely safe. Collision of particles occurs in the world all the time – it is a normal phenomenon. The kinetic energy of the particle collision equals the impact of two mosquitoes, which means that only an elementary particle may appear as a result of such collision. If a black hole appears, it will be a microscopic hole. Black holes do not appear as a result of collisions after all.”

The only thing that can happen after the experiment is a catastrophe with the collider itself, scientists say. It can come out of order. Russia has invested over 200 million Swiss franks in the project. Many parts of the collider were made at Russian enterprises; hundreds of Russian scientists worked at their installment.

The first results of the experiment will be published only in 2010. All the works will be completed in about 20 years.
