Russia will not be NASA's free carrier

Russian Corporation Energia plans to launch new module for the International Space Station

Russia will resume the construction of the new segment of the International Space Station and will stop being the “free space carrier” for NASA, spokesman for the test service of the Russian Space Corporation Energia Alexander Alexandrov told Itar-Tass.

According to Alexandrov, the second cargo block, which is currently being kept at a space center factory, can be used as a new segment for the International Space Station. “There are plans to complete the new block and to set up a new space station module on its base. The module can be used for storing cargoes and equipment. The crew can also work and rest there,” Alexandrov said.

The second cargo block was made as a reserve module for the Zarya block, from which the construction of the International Space Station started on the orbit. The specialist did not mention anything about possible terms to launch the new module. “It depends on the project's financing,” said he.

The construction of the International Space Station was frozen after the tragedy with the Space Shuttle Columbia on February 1st, 2003. Only Russian shuttles Progress have been delivering all cargoes to the space station since then.
