Tornadoes hit Bulgaria

Two people were injured and dozens of houses damaged by tornadoes that hit villages in southern and western Bulgaria, authorities said Tuesday.

A tornado blew the roofs off several houses, uprooted trees and smashed cars in the village of Katina, some 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Sofia early Tuesday, the Civil Defense agency said.

Two women were injured Monday, as another tornado swept through the village of Kalekovets, near the southern city of Plovdiv.

The twister damaged some 80 houses, and trees or tree limbs were brpigjt down by the high winds, causing additional damage to houses and parked cars.

Following a period of hot and humid weather, Bulgaria has been hit by heavy storms and torrential rains caused massive flooding across the Balkan country over the past few days.

The heavy rains are likely to continue, meteorologists said.
