Rescuers found the bodies of two young children in an Italian lake Friday and were searching for the children's father after the presumed capsize of the German tourists' canoe.
Police Col. Paolo Occhipinti told reporters at Lake Bolsena that authorities believed the canoe had turned over as strong winds stirred up waves.
Authorities said it appeared the children had drowned. Both children - a 4-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother - were wearing inflated water wings on their arms, Occhipinti said.
Their mother, who did not go out on the lake, alerted authorities when she could no longer see the boat, officials said.
Fire official Salvatore Politi said the father was wearing only a T-shirt and shorts, and that the lake's waters were chilly.
The search for him was expected to resume at daybreak Saturday at the lake, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Rome.
The head of the Voronezh region, Alexander Gusev, confirmed the death of Major General Vladimir Zavadsky.
