Portuguese police seize 4 metric tons of hashish

Police said Friday they have caught nearly 4 metric tones of hashish and arrested 10 foreigners suspected of smuggling in two separate operations in southern Portugal.

Officers took 2.5 tons (2.8 US tons) from a truck with a British license plate on Thursday and arrested two Britons and a German, a police statement said. Police shot one of the Britons when he tried to escape but he was only lightly injured.

Seven Moroccans were arrested Thursday on speedboats as they allegedly attempted to offload some 1.5 tons (1.7 US tons) of hashish on a beach close to the border with Spain, the statement said. One of the Moroccans also was shot during an attempted escape. His injury was said to be minor.
