Some two-thirds of those contracting civil partnerships, which give gay couples many of the same rights as heterosexual married partners, were men, according to the General Register Office, the AP reports.

Westminster in central London is the most popular registration authority for civil partnership ceremonies, with 238 contracts registered.

Of those contracting civil partnerships, 4,311 were male couples and 2,205 female, the figures showed.
