South Korea: top court defends transgender people

The Supreme Court reversed earlier lower court decisions and ruled in favor of a 51-year-old transgender person who demanded he be allowed to legally change his gender to male. The identity of the plaintiff, who had a sex change when he was 41, wasn't revealed for his privacy.

The changed sex should also be recognized when the transgender people identify themselves more with the opposite sex and people around them treat them as such, according to the ruling, the AP reports.
