ABC television showed the men in green uniforms, some carrying AK33 military assault rifles outside Dili.

Their leader, who identified himself by an alias, said they were recruited by former Interior Minister Rogerio Lobato last month, given arms and taken to Alkatiri's home where they were told their mission, the ABC reported.

The leader said he met Alkatiri at his home on May 8 and claimed they were given a list of targets that included the 600 soldiers whose dismissal sparked a wave of violence that has crippled Dili, the ABC reported.

The list also included renegade members of Fretilin, the ABC report said. The leader said the group was given two vehicles, uniforms, assault rifles, and 6,000 rounds of ammunition, the AP reports.
