Presidential compound in Kyrgyz capital in danger

Some protesters broke into the presidential compound in the Kyrgyz capital Friday. They demur a court decision to uphold pardons for officers involved in the deaths of six peaceful demonstrators four years ago.

The country's Supreme Court on Friday upheld the 2002 sentences of several police and government officials from the southern Aksy district in connection with opening fire on a crowd of demonstrators. Three officials were then given suspended sentences of three-year prison terms but were immediately pardoned. The high court upheld those sentences, which the protesters said were too lenient.

Several dozen Aksy residents went to the presidential headquarters after the Supreme Court decision Friday and a group of them broke into the compound surrounded with an iron fence, demanding to see President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, reports the AP.
