France applauds new US stance on Iran talks

In a statement, Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy also said that European powers plan to make what he called "substantial" proposals to Iran in negotiations, although he gave no details.

In a major policy shift, the United States said it is prepared to join other nations in holding direct talks with Iran on its nuclear program if Iran first agrees to stop disputed nuclear activities.

"I salute the availability of the United States, and eventually of other partners, to join in the negotiation undertaken by Germany, Britain and France with Iran," said the French minister.

"That reinforces the credibility of the European approach and of the proposals that the Europeans want to present to Iran with the support of the international community," he added.

Foreign ministers are meeting Thursday in Vienna to finalize a package of incentives and threats to be presented to Tehran, the AP reports.

"The proposals that we count on making on this occasion will be substantial, thanks notably to increased commitment from our partners," said Douste-Blazy.

"We hope that the Iranian authorities will take the necessary time to examine these proposals and will respond in a constructive spirit," he added.
