Australia will commit troops to East Timor

 Costello said Australia received a formal request for military assistance from Dili late Wednesday, and was prepared to send troops to the fledgling country subject to a bilateral agreement on the terms of deployment, the AP reports. 

He said Australia would send a party of defense and foreign affairs officials to East Timor on Thursday to finalize the plans.
