Prostitute rejects militiaman, he kills 10 people

A militia man killed at least 10 civilians in northern Uganda and injured 26 others after a prostitute rejected him, a police officer said Monday. Peter Okullo, a member of militias the government uses to guard people who have been forced from their homes by the 19-year conflict in northern Uganda, killed the people on Sunday after spending most of the evening drinking local gin at a bar in Ogwete, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) northeast of the capital, Kampala, said Ivan Nkwasibwe, Lira District police commander.

Residents of the government camp for the homeless, where the bar is located, demonstrated Tuesday at the local administration's office demanding Okullo be punished by execution by firing squad. Okullo, "made advances to a prostitute, but she did not respond positively," said Nkwasibwe. "When he realized that other men had won the woman who refused him, he became hostile and started shooting at people randomly."

He is in police custody, Nkwasibwe said. The injured are in hospitals in Lira, he said. Rebels have fought a 19-year conflict in northern Uganda, making over 1.6 million people homeless and abducting tens of thousands of boys and girls, turning them into fighters and sex slaves, reports the AP.
