Powerful earthquake hits Far Eastern region in Russia

A powerful earthquake shook a remote province in Russia's Far East on Tuesday, disrupting water and electricity supplies, Russian media reported. No one was injured.

The quake of hit the village of Tilichki in the Koryak region some 7,000 kilometers (4,350 miles) east of Moscow, forcing dozens of residents to be evacuated from their homes, the reports said. The U.S. Geological Survey said a 6.6-magnitude quake struck the area early Tuesday.

In late April, the village suffered a series of strong quakes that led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents and disrupted utilities in the district.

NTV television showed footage of several dozen tents set up for the evacuated villagers. The channel cited seismologists as saying the region could be hit by more earthquakes in the near future, but they are expected to be less powerful.

The RIA-Novosti news agency reported citing local emergency officials that water and electricity supplies in Tilichki were restored later in the day, reports the AP.
