Dozens of armed Hamas militants gathered outside the Gaza-Egypt border crossing Friday in a tense standoff after Palestinian security officials confiscated a large sum of money from a high-profile Hamas official.
The officials, loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas, confiscated Ђ 639,000 ($817,000) from Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman.
Abu Zuhri's attempt to bring in such a large sum could be an indication of how desperate the cash-strapped Hamas government is to bring in money to pay long-overdue salaries, reports the AP.
