Iraq: U.S. Marine killed by road side bomb in Baghdad

A U.S. Marine was killed when his vehicle was hit by a road side bomb northwest of Baghdad, the U.S. command said Sunday.

The Marine, assigned to Regimental Combat Team 2 of the 2nd Marine Division was killed during combat operations Saturday near Haditha, 220 kilometers (140 miles) northwest of Baghdad.

The identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Earlier, the U.S. military reported that five U.S. soldiers were killed Saturday in a pair of roadside bombings in northern Iraq. The soldiers were assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division and were on patrol near Beiji, 250 kilometers (155 miles) north of Baghdad, the statement said.

As of Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at least 2,091 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 1,632 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers. The figures include five military civilians, reported AP. P.T.
