Six Indians die in flood

At least six women died in a stampede for flood relief aid in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, officials say. Dozens of others were injured in the crush outside a college building in the state capital, Madras (Chennai).

Officials say hundreds of people had gathered early on Sunday for money and food which was to be distributed to victims of recent floods in the region.

They said the stampede began after a rumour that relief distribution had begun. Those killed died on the spot. Witnesses say people scrambled over each other in their haste to get to the building's gates in the city's Vyasar Padi neighbourhood, crushing the victims.

Heavy rains in southern India at the end of October killed at least 100 people in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, reports BBC news. I.L.
