Indonesian ex-dictator Suharto leaves hospital

Former Indonesian strongman Suharto left a hospital Sunday after two days of treatment for intestinal bleeding, reports said.

Suharto was rushed to the hospital on Friday, a day after receiving hundreds of visitors at his residence to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr. Doctors said he was suffering from a low hemoglobin count caused by the bleeding, but was recovering well after receiving blood transfusions.

On Sunday, Suharto, 84, was wheeled out of Jakarta's Pertamina Hospital by his eldest daughter, Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana, media reports said.

Suharto, who ruled Indonesia with an iron fist for 32 years, was forced to resign in 1998. Two years later, he was indicted for allegedly embezzling US$600 million (-467 million). But legal proceedings against him were suspended after he developed a number of ailments, AP reported. V.A.
