Six killed, four injured in stampede at flood relief camp in southern India

A stampede at a flood relief camp in rain-battered southern India on Sunday killed at least six people and injured four others, a news report said.

The stampede in the Vyasar Padi neighborhood of Madras city occurred as hundreds of flood victims jostled to grab rice and money offered by the government, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

The report didn't give further details.

Heavy rains and a storm battered India's southern coast last month, killing at least 100 people and leaving thousands of people homeless.

The government of Tamil Nadu state _ the worst hit _ said it would provide aid consisting of 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of rice and 2,000 rupees (US$45; -37) in cash to each flood-affected family. Madras, also known as Chennai, is the capital of Tamil Nadu, AP reported. V.A.
