Counter-demonstrators block far-right march in Germany

A group of counter-demonstrators on Saturday blocked a march by some 250 extreme rightists through the east German city of Potsdam.

Several thousand people turned out to demonstrate against the march, organized by Christian Worch, one of Germany's most visible right-wing extremists. They blocked a junction on the route for several hours, forcing the far-right group to hold its rally at a suburban rail station instead.

Police deployed more than 2,000 officers to prevent clashes between the two sides. No major incidents were reported. Confrontations between extreme-right marchers and counter-protesters are a regular event in Germany, AP reports.
