Top Lebanese politician to meet with Russian foreign minister

A top Lebanese politician was due to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Thursday for talks on Syria and the U.N. investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Walid Jumblatt, the political leader of Lebanon's Druse community, was expected to discuss the situation surrounding a U.N. resolution which threatened unspecified action if Syria did not cooperate with the U.N. probe.

Jumblatt earlier praised Russia for helping Syria avoid international sanctions stemming from the investigation, which concluded that it was unlikely Hariri could have been killed without senior Syrian approval, the AP reports.
