NATO chief to talk on European security issues

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer was to address European security issues in two speeches to be delivered Thursday during a visit to Austria.

De Hoop Scheffer was to address the permanent council of the Vienna-based Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, a 55-nation trans-Atlantic security group. The OSCE said he would discuss cooperation between NATO and the OSCE and other security concerns.

De Hoop Scheffer, a former Dutch foreign minister, was the OSCE's chairman when the Netherlands held the rotating leadership of the organization in 2003.

Later Thursday, he was to deliver a speech on security to the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, the AP reports.
