Four killed in fighting between Turkish soldiers and Kurdish rebels

Kurdish rebels killed two soldiers and a government-employed village guard and injured four other soldiers in a clash in southeastern Turkey, officials confirmed Tuesday. One Kurdish rebel was also killed in the fighting.

The clash broke out late Monday in a mountainous area near the town of Uludere in Sirnak province, which borders Iraq and Syria, the local governor's office said.

The rebels reportedly were trying to infiltrate into Turkey.

The Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, on Oct. 3 ended a unilateral cease-fire that it started Aug. 20, and vowed to increase attacks.

Turkey had ignored the cease-fire, and has promised to fight the group until all members either surrender or are killed.

The violence in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish southeast has claimed more than 37,000 lives since 1984, the AP reports.
