Washington: officials react sharply to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's comments on Israel

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad laid bare the "true views and intentions" of his government when he said that Israel should be annihilated, the Bush administration said yesterday. The remarks serve "serve to underscore our concern as well as the international community's concern about Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

At a conference of students in Iran, Ahmadinejad declared that Israel is a "disgraceful blot" that should be "wiped off the map."

McClellan and McCormack both said the speech reconfirms what the administration has been saying about Iran, reported AP.
