EU likely to impose precautionary ban on imports of live poultry, pet birds, feathers from Croatia

The European Union head office is likely to impose a precautionary ban on the import of live poultry, pet birds and feathers from Croatia, after positive bird flu tests there, according to officials.

EU spokesman Jonathan Todd said the European Commission decision, expected later Monday, would endorse a decision already taken by Croatian authorities after the discovery of six infected swans last week, the AP reports.

"We take note of the fact that Croatian authorities have already banned exports of live poultry, live pet birds and feathers," Todd said. "A decision to impose a ban on imports into the European Union of live poultry, pet birds and feathers from Croatia ... is in the process of being prepared and is likely to be adopted by the Commission later today."
