Singer Marc Cohn shot in head miraculously survived

A Grammy-winning singer Marc Cohn and husband of ABC news reporter Elizabeth Vargas was treated at a hospital and released Monday after being shot in the head during an attempted carjacking following a performance.

Police said Cohn had performed at the Denver Botanical Gardens on Sunday night and was driving back to his hotel with band members when a man who was fleeing security officers tried to carjack their van.

The van's driver tried to drive around the gunman, who then fired, striking Cohn, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said, CNN reports.

"Marc Cohn was shot in the head above his right temple. The bullet was lodged in his head but has since been taken out," Malluk said.

Sonny Jackson said the bullet appeared to have been slowed by the van's windshield and by striking the vehicle's driver first.

"Frankly, I can't tell you how he survived," Jackson was quoted as saying by AP.

Cohn's road manager, Tom Dube, was injured in the attack by flying glass that hit him in the face and eye, said Malluk. Dube has also been released from the hospital.

Police interviewed Cohn and the other band members Monday morning, Jackson said.

The suspect, identified as wanted felon Joseph Yacten, remains on the loose. Jackson said Yacten had been arrested in late June on possession of a controlled substance and possession of a weapon by a previous felon.

Yacteen also allegedly fired several shots while fleeing security guards and trying to take a car from a woman. He eventually disappeared in a stolen SUV.

Yacteen is being sought on attempted first-degree murder, robbery and other charges. Authorities said he missed a court date July 15 on a drug and weapons charge.

The man, who was out on $25,000 bond, was to have appeared in court July 15 but failed to show up, Jackson said.

He said that before the shooting, the gunman had tried to use a credit card at a nearby hotel but then immediately ran from the building. He tried to carjack another vehicle as security guards pursued him, and then came across Cohn's vehicle.
