US and Russian senators called on the G-8 to examine various issues as regards the fight against illicit drug trafficking in a comprehensive manner.
Mikhail Margelov, chairman of the Federation Council's foreign affairs committee, and his US counterpart Trent Lott signed a joint statement April 13.
In his words, the joint address to G-8 leaders deals with drug production, transportation and sales. This important problem is closely linked with the AIDS problem and the financing of terrorist activity. We cannot but discuss this problem, Margelov added.
The UN estimates that about 185 million people, or three percent of this planet's entire population, use drugs at this stage. The global drug turnover stands at about $400 billion per year.
Russia is to host a regular G-8 summit in 2006.
