"Incorrect" judge's decision to permit same-sex marriage

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said yesterday that the city will appeal a Manhattan judge's ruling that allowed for &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/mailbox/22/101/399/12940_.html ' target=_blank>same-sex marriage, citing the decision to be "incorrect."

"Our legal staff, our Corporation Counsel believes that the judge's ruling was incorrect, that the current state constitution does not permit same-sex marriage" the mayor said yesterday.

"We will go and appeal and we will ask the court to expedite the appeal directly to the highest court so that people will have a right once and for all to know where they stand," he said, as New York Newsday reported.

According to the Hindustan Times, delivering the judgement, Justice Doris Ling-Cohan said the law denying &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/main/18/90/359/14838_homosexual.html' target=_blank>gay marriages deprived them from equal protection.

Ling-Cohan, in her 62-page judgement, likened the law to one, which once banned inter-racial marriages and said under both Federal and New York State constitutions, it is beyond question that the right to liberty extends to protect marriages.
