Ashlee Simpson was caught doing lip-synch

Saturday Night Live" creator Lorne Michaels picked up the seventh annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center on Monday, but the buzz "SNL" created when singer Ashlee Simpson left the stage midsong Saturday threatens to overshadow the honor.

The singer's father, Joe Simpson, claims his daughter was suffering from acid reflux that night and needed a backing track to smooth out her scratchy voice. Miss Simpson, meanwhile, took her own stab at damage control Monday evening by jokingly pretending to have begun the wrong song during her performance on NBC's Radio Music Awards telecast, wrote Washington Times.

According to Reuters, on Saturday's "SNL," Simpson became flustered and eventually walked offstage after the wrong prerecorded track began playing during what was supposed to look like a &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/culture/2001/10/05/17182.html ' target=_blank>live performance. "I don't think this will hurt her credibility with kids; they won't care," said Joe Simpson, because they have already gotten to know his daughters through their MTV reality shows, "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica" and "The Ashlee Simpson Show."

"Unfortunately, that happened to us on Saturday, so just like every other artist in America she has backing tracks ... so you don't have to hear her croaking through a song on national television."

"She never used them before," he said of the vocal tracks, but "you have to do what you have to do."
