MTV Awards: Australian rock band Jet

Melbourne rock band Jet has become the first Australian band to take out the "best rock video" prize at the MTV Awards.

Jet performed the winning song, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?", surrounded by gyrating go-go dancers in front of an audience of 13,000 at the Miami ceremony on Sunday night.

Drummer Chris Cester dedicated the win to his and singer Nic's father, John Cester, who died of cancer this month.

The minimalist clip, directed by Robert Hales, beat the Darkness' "I Believe in a Thing Called Love", Hoobastank's "The Reason", Evanescence's "My Immortal" and Linkin Park's "Breaking the Habit".

Chris Cester said he made his outfit for the ceremony for $50. "I wore this hat all during our tour, which means that it has been in 250 shows," he said. "I just had to wear it here.", according to the Age.

The four-piece band, whose other members are Mark Wilson and Cameron Muncey, performed their hit at the star-studded event.

Drummer Chris spoke of how laid-back the band was about their image. Jet recently finished a sell-out tour of the US and their debut album Get Born has sold a phenomenal 2.5 million copies worldwide, with more than one million of those in America, reports Herald Sun.
