Lithuanian Premier says President Rolandas Paksas should resign

'There is no government crisis in the country. There is only one problem and that is the president,' Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas announced on national radio today. He said it would be better if President Rolandas Paksas decided to resign.

Mr Brazauskas said that Mr Paksas has lost the support of the nation recently, his ratings have dropped and the country's youth and intelligentsia are against him. If Mr Paksas decides to resign then it will mean that parliament will not have to deal with the long and complicated process of impeachment. According to Mr Brazauskas, it is possible to gather 85 votes in the Lithuanian parliament which would force Mr Paksas out of office.

Mr Brazauskas stressed that the national presidency should not be insulted. He added that difficult situations had arisen in the country's 13 years of independence but they have all been overcome. This problem will also be overcome in his opinion.

A parliamentary assembly will take place in Lithuania today, where the issue of impeachment will be discussed.
