Bashkirian Days Begin in Saxony

An official delegation from Bashkiria, headed by Prime Minister Rafael Baidavletov, has left on a three-day visit to Saxony. The Bashkirian Ministry for Economic Cooperation told Rosbalt that the visit is devoted to the tenth anniversary of the start of bilateral cooperation between Bashkiria and Saxony.

According to the ministry, the visit is taking place as part of the Bashkirian Days in Saxony (April 7-10). The Bashkirian delegation includes 80 officials representing business circles and the public sphere. It is planned that the delegation will meet with Georg Milbradt, the Prime Minister of Saxony, and sign a statement on continued partnership. There will also be meetings between representatives of business circles, and visits to the Leipzig International Fair, and business and cultural centres in Dresden and Leipzig.

A joint declaration by the governments of Bashkiria and Saxony on trade, economic, social and cultural ties and a financial protocol were signed on June 12, 1992. In 1993 and 1996 the government of Saxony gave Bashkiria two loans worth 190 million deutschmarks (EUR 97 million) for a range of large-scale projects, including supplying equipment to leading local companies. In 2001 close economic ties were established between Leipzig and Ufa.

In June 2001 the Saxony Days were held in the Bashkirian capital. In June 2002 a parliamentary delegation from Saxony came to Bashkiria on an official visit. A return visit by a Bashkirian delegation was planned for last autumn, but was postponed due to flooding in Germany.
