Kyrgyz leadership and opposition call for society's consolidation

On Friday Bishkek hosted the third national round table "Interaction and cooperation for the sake of Kyrgyzstan", involving the republic's leadership and opposition.

The parties worked out a joint resolution, calling on all progressive forces in the republic "to seek consolidation".

When speaking at the meeting, Kyrgyz president Askar Akayev pointed out that the situation in the country's social and political life remained difficult, despite all the steps taken by the government to override the consequences of the Aksy events, when clashes between demonstrators and police had killed 5 people and wounded dozens.

"Learning the lesson of this tragedy, we should know that it cannot be used for achieving political goal, as it borders on extremism," Akayev told the opposition representatives.

It is time for the official authorities and opposition to "work out a common platform" to stabilize the situation in the country, while "torpedoing these efforts is blasphemous towards our own people," the president stressed.
