G-8 session to be devoted to issues of fight against international terrorism

Issues concerning the fight against international terrorism will top the agenda of the June 12-13 meeting of the G-8 Foreign Ministers in Whistler /Canada/. This was disclosed by official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Aleksander Yakovenko.

According to the Russian diplomat, this issue acquired the G-8 priority after the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. He recalled that the G-8 was occupied with the anti-terrorist topic since 1996.

The Ministers will sum up the extensive work concerning the fulfilment of the anti-terrorist plan of actions, which was prepared by G-8 in accordance with the Joint statement of the State and Government heads of September 19th, 2001, Yakovenko said. Further tasks of cooperation will be determined and the corresponding recommendations will be defined.

According to the diplomat, the G-8 leaders will submit a report on the issue. The report reflects an unprecedented example of the G-8 countries' interaction, which encircles a huge spectrum of political, diplomatic and practical efforts," Yakovenko stressed.

The Ministers will also discuss the prevention of terrorist access to weapons of mass destruction, dangerous materials and technologies. In this context the priority must be given to the strengthening of the regimes of non-proliferation and arms control, the diplomat underlined.
