India, Kazakhstan agree on military-technical co-operation

Kazakhstan and India stand together on establishing peace and stability in Asia, Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said following negotiations with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The Indian Prime Minister arrived in Alma-Ata on the previous day. On Monday he met with Nazarbayev to discuss bilateral co-operation.

Asked whether the situation on the Indo-Pakistani border had been highlighted during the talks, the Indian prime-minister stated that both sides had expressed the hope that the number of those believing in terrorism and religious extremism would not increase. According to Vajpayee, the sides considered a set of steps to be taken to safeguard peace in the region.

The negotiations between the parties yielded a protocol on military-technical co-operation and an agreement on setting up an India-Kazakhstan working group for joint fight against terrorism and other crimes. The Indian premier stressed that as far as the two countries' military-technical co-operation was concerned, the format of "contractor - customer" should be replaced with an exchange of technologies and research.
