Exposed: Indonesian timber barons

A massive trade in illegally felled timber has been exposed at a time when the world’s rain forests are under threat of disappearance, their inhabitants threatened with extinction.

A BBC journalist travelled to the Indonesian island of Borneo, where he obtained photographic evidence of illegal tree felling. Discovery would have meant death at the hands of the timber barons, who control this lucrative trade.

Every day, log trains worth 300,000 USD are driven down the rivers to be collected for exportation abroad. Experts estimate that in 15 years’ time, Borneo’s lush green rain forests will be barren, leaving the orang-utang and other animals which inhabit it to their inevitable fate.
