Moscow attaches much importance to intensive work of the United Nations' Security Council on the Afghan trek: alongside active work against international terrorism the UN Security Council goes on giving priority attention to the promotion of political settlement in Afghanistan. A communique of the Russian Foreign Ministry, which came to hand at RIA Novosti on Wednesday, says that efficiency of this work enables the strengthening of the central role of the United Nations in promoting political settlement in Afghanistan and success of its post-conflict rehabilitation. The Russian Foreign Ministry is convinced that an important result of this work will be also confirmation of the UN's and its Security Council's comprehensive approach to the struggle against international terrorism. This approach is oriented not only towards prevention and ending acts of terrorism, but also towards elimination of deep-seated socio-economic, political and humanitarian conflicts, which supply the breeding ground for terrorism and extremism, says the Foreign Ministry's communique. A regular discussion by UN Security Council members of the problems of Afghanistan on October 16, with the participation of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his recently appointed Special Envoy for Afghanistan Lahdaar Brahimi, confirmed unanimous understanding of the importance of the United Nations' efficient assistance to formation of a capable and representative government of Afghanistan on the multiethnic bases, says the communique of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
