A military and political situation in Central Asia will depend largely on developments in Afghanistan, said Kirghiz President Askar Akaev Tuesday. In an address to the nation and parliament, he maintained that no wide-scale retaliation is capable of bringing the desirable results unless the breeding grounds of terrorism and extremism are spotted and uprooted. The retaliation is directed against international terrorists while the Afghan people have gained a chance to pass over to peaceful life, to return refugees and to revive the country, said Askar Akaev. The Kirghiz leader spoke in favour of the UN as a key player in a political settlement in Afghanistan after the anti-terrorist operation is over. Kirghizia will take part in the rehabilitation of a post-war Afghanistan, concluded Askar Akaev.
