Uzbek Officials Deny That Situation Aggravated On Border With Afghanistan

Uzbek officials refute information that the situation on the border with Afghanistan has aggravated. According to Alisher Ruziyev, heading a department in the Surkhandarya regional administration, the situation in the region bordering on Afghanistan is "calm and even commonplace". These days are a very busy period for farmers, since cotton harvest is to be gathered. Besides, preparation of the 2500th anniversary of the region's major city Termez is underway, according to Ruziyev. Meanwhile, foreign journalists keep arriving in the Surkhandarya region. According to Ruziyev, over 20 journalists have come to Termez baffled by media reports that 8 to 10 thousand Taliban troops have been concentrated on the border with Uzbekistan. At the same time, autumn is a wedding-time in Uzbekistan, therefore foreign journalists are having a good time instead of writing "hot" reports. Just married and their parents ply journalists with invitations to wedding - "foreign journalists do not turn up every day," said Ruziyev.
