Calls Echo Around Georgia For New Political System

Chairman of the Georgian parliament's defence and security committee Georgy Baramidze believes that the country should become a parliamentary republic. This opinion echoes calls for a change to be made to the country's political system. Baramidze told RIA Novosti on Friday that the current political system needed to be changed if the country were to extricate itself from the current crisis. At the same time, in his opinion, "the institution of the presidency could be maintained, but it would be of a symbolic nature, i.e. the president would not have wide powers." Baramidze also said that he believed that all the representatives of the authorities were to some extent culpable for the current events. However, he stressed that "above all, the president" was to blame, as he had been warned about the impending crisis by parliamentary speaker Zurab Zhvaniya.
