USA, Russia To Go On With ABM Dialogue: Bush

The USA and Russia will continue its dialogue on anti-missile defence as each has a view all its own of the ABM treaty, said US President George W. Bush as he and Russia's President Vladimir Putin were addressing a joint news conference. The dialogue is indispensable for a new strategic framework to enable the two countries to face 21st century challenges. the USA and Russia will make their debates as friends and partners, not enemies, stressed President Bush. He had told President Putin that the United States intended to cut its nuclear arsenals to 2,000 or even 1,700 warheads, he added. Friendly dialogue concerns the entire field of US-Russian contacts, and allows to come at shared stances on regional issues--suffice it to mention the Middle East, where the two countries must make practical steps to bring down tensions. Peace is also the goal of the European Atlantic community, which holds in due respect the sovereignty and independence of all democratic countries in Europe. Russia must be part and parcel of such Europe, and the USA will work together with NATO to offer new ways of consultations with Russia. President Bush hopes Russia and the USA will solve sophisticated problems. They have made spectacular progress in a partnership which makes the whole world feel a safer place. This is the US President's firm conviction. President Bush thanked President Putin for constructive bilateral summits.
