Russia Interested In Cypriote Settlement

Russia voices active support of the relevant UN resolutions on the Cypriote settlement, Head of the Russian Audit Chamber Sergei Stepashin told President of Cyprus Glafcos Clerides on November 28. According to Stepashin, Russia's standpoint on the Cypriote settlement is especially vital in connection with recent claims of the Turkish leaders on Turkey's possible annexation of the occupied part of the island if Cyprus was admitted to the European Union. However, Cyprus is one of the best-prepared states to enter the EU, Stepashin says. The countries of the region can only benefit by its entering the EU and by establishing the atmosphere of trust, peace and security. In Cyprus Stepashin met Cypriote Prosecutor-General Alekos Markides, Head of Parliament Dimitros Christofias and held talks with his counterpart, Auditor-General Chrystalla Georghadji.
