Russia, U.S. Determine Priority Directions Of Cooperation In Atomic Energy

Russian Atomic Energy Minister Alexander Rumyantsev and U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham held talks November 28-29 to determine priority directions of the two countries' cooperation in the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. According to the information of the Russian Atomic Energy Ministry, this concerns processing high-enriched uranium from dismantled nuclear warheads into low-enriched uranium to be used as a fuel for nuclear power plants. Moreover, this also concerns the inventorying and protection of nuclear materials and utilisation of weapons-grade plutonium. The sides also agreed to jointly conduct research seeking cheaper technologies for production and processing of peaceful atom. The Russian side at the talks advocated that both countries conclude a full-scale agreement on cooperation in using atomic energy for peaceful purposes.
