US vetoes UN Security Council resolution on Middle East

The USA declared that because the text had a “major error”, namely the omission of the wording condemning “the recent acts of terrorism against the Israelis or for which they are responsible”.

However, as France pointed out, the text contained a reference condemning “all acts of terror” and “the excessive use of force”, and it encouraged the setting up of a supervisory mechanism to resolve the conflict.

It was evidently this reference to Israel’s excessive use of force which goaded the USA into using its power of veto, the second such act in the last nine months.

Such “excessive use of force” was again apparent in the Israeli military incursion into Beit Hannun (Gaza Strip), which left 4 Palestinians dead and 75 injured, 15 seriously. They pulled out after the US envoy to the Middle East, Anthony Zinni, was recalled to Washington for consultations.
