Sweden Continues Talks with Russia over Air Corridor to Asia

Sweden intends to continue talks with Russia over providing an air corridor for flights from Kallax airport in Sweden at to Asian countries. This was announced to journalists by Swedish minister Ulrika Messing, who is planning to meet the Russian Transport Minister in the near future.

The Swedish interest stems from the fact that an air corridor over North-West Russia would allow the Swedish airport near Lulea to be used as a stop-off point for refueling cargo aircraft on long-haul flights from America and Europe to Asia.

In 1999 significant investments were made in modernizing and expanding Kallax airport to enable it to handle around 86 planes a week. However, due to the Russian ban on flights over North-West Russia, the airport refuels only 6 planes a month.
