Igor Ivanov Appeals for Identical Attitudes to Terrorism

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov has appealed for identical attitudes to terrorism in different countries, be it the USA, the Mideast, Europe or Chechnya.

"Acts of terrorism cannot be justified," he told journalists upon his arrival in New York.

In Ivanov's opinion, terrorism is an absolute evil, and this means "it is necessary to persuade the world community that there must be no double standards." "The United Nations Security Council must once again lay down the rule that terrorists must inevitably be punished in accordance with the principle 'extradite or try'," he said.

Besides, it is important to go on fighting the "deeply imbedded root" of terrorism, went on Ivanov. He added that the priority task was to prevent and suppress those of the acts of terrorism that involve weapons of mass destruction.

"It is a matter of principle that the UN Security Council confirm that all forms and manifestations of terrorism is one of the most serious threats to peace and security," he stressed, adding that all antiterrorist efforts must be based on the principles of international law.
