Japan Allocates Resources to Utilize Russian Nuclear Submarines in the Rar East

At a briefing in Moscow a member of the Japanese delegation stated that Japan had allocated USD 160 million to utilize Russian nuclear submarines in the Far East.

According to him, presently there were 41 decommissioned Russian nuclear submarines in the Far East. According to the preliminary information, the cost of utilization of one submarine would amount to approximately USD 5 million.

He also reported that they had held consultations with representatives of the Russian Ministry of Atomic energy to come to an agreement to establish working groups headed by Russian and Japanese coordinators to expedite the program of utilization of decommissioned submarines. The groups are scheduled to work in turn in Moscow, Tokyo and Vladivostok.
