PM Peter Medgyessy of Hungary arrives in Moscow for an official visit

Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy of Hungary arrives in Moscow on Wednesday for an official visit. A RIA Novosti correspondent was told about it by the Hungarian Ambassador in Moscow Ferenc Kontra.

In his interview to RIA Novosti the day before, the Hungarian Prime Minister said that in the course of the coming negotiations "Hungary would like to restore the level of bilateral meetings and to establish equitable relations with Russia which would be based on predictability and mutual trust." The main theme at the coming negotiations will be trade and economic cooperation. In the opinion of the two sides, the present level of relations between Hungary and Russia considerably legs behind the desires and possibilities. Peter Medgyessy also told RIA Novosti that the Hungarian side intended to discuss in Moscow the reduction of the unfavourable balance of trade with Russia which amounts to two billion dollars.

In the opinion of the Hungarian Prime Minster, Moscow and Budapest have good perspectives for cooperation. He pointed out in particular that the sides had reached an agreement on the payment of part of the Russian debt to Hungary.

According to the data at the disposal of RIA Novosti, the Russian side is also ready to outline and coordinate joint steps which are called upon to continue the positive dynamics in our mutual relations. At these negotiations the sides will also discuss urgent problems of the world and European policy, including the joining of international efforts in the fight against the new challenges and global threats.

A special attention is planned to be paid to the development of relations between Russia and NATO and also to the possibilities of cooperating within the framework of the Russia-NATO Council which was set up in Rome. Moscow also plans to discuss the expansion of the European Union, also in the context of the coming entry of Hungary into this organisation. Russia stands for this process not to hamper the further development of our cooperation with the candidate countries and with the European Union as a whole.

As the RIA Novosti correspondent was told by the Hungarian Ambassador Ferenc Kontra, it is expected that the visit will result in signing a number of inter-governmental agreements on air communication, on cooperation in environmental protection and on military-technological cooperation.

Touching upon military-technological cooperation, the ambassador pointed out that it implied the deliveries of spare parts, the prolongation of the period of the operation and the modernisation of the Soviet-made military equipment now in service in the Hungarian army.

The visit by Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy to Russia will be completed on December 21st.
